Reasons for Common PCB Design Errors
When relying on printed circuit boards to achieve the desired functionality of a product, even a small error can lead to significant setbacks in your operation. That's why it's so crucial to address everything correctly at the first instance. Of course, this isn't always possible—but if you plan ahead and carefully avoid these mishaps, you're more likely to be 100% satisfied with the final outcome.
Reasons for Common PCB Design Errors
1.Overly Complex Design: The PCB manufacturing process is already quite complex. Ideally, your PCB assembly factory would prefer to manufacture printed circuit boards in the most cost-effective manner. Overly complex designs can complicate this process and may actually put the functionality of the circuit board at risk. Collaborate with your PCB assembly partner to ensure that circuit boards are constructed in a simple and efficient manner, avoiding unnecessary delays and reducing costs.
2.Incorrect or Missing Gerber Files: Gerber files must adhere to the industry-standard RS274X. All current versions of CAD programs can generate the -X format. Gerber files are used for paste layers.
3.Failure to Quickly Detect Errors: Your PCB wafer manufacturer and assembly partners should be able to detect most errors before PCB production, provided they have a comprehensive design review process. They should also use state-of-the-art technology for thorough PCB inspections to ensure that your circuit boards function properly upon delivery. Otherwise, your operations may suffer significant losses due to delays or even product failures. Before selecting a PCB manufacturer, make sure they have the capability to fulfill their PCB inspection commitments.
4.The BOM format is incorrect: Component BOM must be in CSV format. PDF documents cannot be reliably converted to CSV format. Additionally, the BOM needs to include reference marks, values, packaging/labels, descriptions, and part numbers.
5.Failure to collaborate with reputable PCB assembly factories: Some companies believe they can manufacture PCBs themselves or want to collaborate with the cheapest PCB manufacturers they can find. Unfortunately, this often leads to delays and costly errors—so in the long run, you won't save much! Remember, automated production lines can place and solder more components compared to 50 manual soldering operators. This means that when time is a factor (which is almost always the case), you'll choose a company that can produce PCBs quickly. Typically, this means you'll collaborate with companies that have a high reputation and extensive experience in the industry, rather than solely based on price.
6.Missing documents: Pick-and-place machines use XYRS coordinates for SMT components. Almost every CAD program can generate XYRS data. If you're not using turnkey services, each kit must also include a packing list or invoice for comparison with the BOM. Additionally, the internal operation number should be noted on the packaging box.
